Momentum has advised Rethink Ventures on its investment in the Deep-Tech and E-Mobility start-up Hyperdrives as part of a EUR 3 million pre-seed venture capital financing round
Frankfurt am Main, September 12, 2025: The transaction law firm Momentum has advised Rethink Ventures on its investment in the Deep-Tech and E-Mobility start-up Hyperdrives as part of a EUR 3 million pre-seed venture capital financing round.
The financing round was led by Rethink Ventures, with participation from First Momentum Ventures, SDAC, Acequia Capital, 2100 Ventures, Prototype Capital and several angel investors. With the new funds, Hyperdrives will focus on converting its strong customer pipeline into commercial projects, validating service life to automotive standards, and preparing its manufacturing processes for industrial-scale deployment.
Comments on the Exit
Matthias Schanze – General Partner, Rethink Ventures: “Hyperdrives solves the toughest trade-off in e-mobility: peak performance versus scalability. Their waveguide platform is the first to combine motorsport power density with VW-level costs and manufacturing. We support the Hyperdrives team because we are convinced that this combination is the key to the widespread electrification of all modes of transport.”
Robin Renz – CEO & Co-Founder, Hyperdrives: “With Hyperdrives, we are building the turbocharger for electric drives: with the best performance-to-cost ratio on the market, consistently developed for industrial series production.”
“At Hyperdrives, we are demonstrating that breakthroughs in electric motor performance do not require new factories or exotic concepts. Our technology enables manufacturers to offer their customers greater range while saving billions in material costs – without having to fundamentally change their production processes. Our approach is one of partnership rather than competition. We bring versatile technology that fits seamlessly into the industry and creates immediate benefits in terms of cost and performance – from passenger cars and commercial vehicles to electric flight.”
Michael Numberger – CTO & Founder, Hyperdrives: “We have taken waveguide cooling from the laboratory to the production line. This enables up to three times higher current densities – more power with less weight, and suitable for large-scale production.”
“The real breakthrough for Hyperdrives lies in taking waveguide cooling from concept to industrialisation. Direct cooling in the copper conductor allows us to achieve continuous current densities that are around three times higher than those of today’s series motors. This means more power in the same installation space or the same power in significantly smaller, lighter machines. In aviation, for example, continuous power densities of over 12 kW/kg – far beyond conventional systems – enable weight savings of over 150 kg in eVTOLs and drones, resulting in longer flight times. Crucially, all of this can be manufactured on existing hairpin lines – scalable, cost-effective and in large-scale industrial production.”
Andreas Fischer –Founding Partner, First Momentum Ventures: “Hyperdrives is a rare example of hardware deep tech that fits seamlessly into existing industry. While many high-performance motor manufacturers are forcing radical redesigns or competing directly with OEMs, Hyperdrives focuses on partnership rather than competition. By implementing waveguide cooling on existing production lines, the team is creating revolutionary performance through evolutionary design. This turns a laboratory idea into a technology that is truly suitable for large-scale industrial production. Hyperdrives is approaching the industry both commercially and technologically – and that is precisely why we believe in its transformative potential.”
Dr Andreas Cornet – Board Member, Hyperdrives (former Senior Partner, McKinsey & Co.): “The automotive industry, Germany’s industrial lifeline, is in the midst of the most profound transformation in its history. The winners in global competition will be those who manage to combine cost leadership with technological leadership. Hyperdrives shows how this can be achieved: a bold, world-class team of engineers developing electric drives that are both more powerful and more cost-efficient. This is exactly what our industry needs to maintain its leading role in the age of electrification.”
Philipp Weber – Venture Capital & Private Equity Partner at Momentum, adds: “The transition to electric mobility is one of the key industrial policy challenges of our time. Hyperdrives is a technology that delivers cutting-edge performance – a real game changer. At Momentum, we have extensive experience in supporting deep tech and hardware investments and are delighted to have provided Rethink Ventures with comprehensive legal support in this forward-looking financing round.”
About Rethink Ventures

Rethink Ventures is a venture capital firm focused exclusively on investing in a sustainable future for transport.
With rapid technological change and the urgent need for decarbonisation, we are facing fantastic new opportunities. We are supported by leading institutional investors, companies and entrepreneurs. Our mission is to invest in founders who are rethinking the way we transport people and goods and making a real impact on the industry. Our goal is to provide founders with the best possible support through in-depth expertise and an extensive network.
About Hyperdrives
Hyperdrives is a deep tech company founded in Munich that develops the next generation of electric drives for the mass market. Its mission: to make high-performance technology available at mass production costs.
The founders combine motorsport with large-scale industrial experience. Their key insight: innovations can only become established on a large scale if they can be seamlessly integrated into existing industrial processes. Hyperdrives has therefore developed a revolutionary cooling system for electric motors that can be manufactured industrially for the first time – without the need for new factories or exotic materials.
The result is motors that are significantly lighter, smaller and more efficient than today’s series solutions. OEMs and suppliers benefit from significant material and cost savings, while end customers receive vehicles that drive further, accelerate faster and are more affordable.
Hyperdrives supplies ready-to-use drive systems with integrated SiC inverters in small to medium quantities for automotive, aviation and marine customers. Hyperdrives offers technology licences to large-scale manufacturers and suppliers for their own production.
